Boeing can trace its nearly year history back to the banks of the Lower Duwamish Waterway. In addition to supplying the U.S. military with nearly 7, B bombers throughout World War II, Boeing Plant 2 provided thousands of Washington men and women with manufacturing and industrial jobs. The early action areas for cleanup are Slip 4, Terminal , Boeing Plant 2, Jorgensen Forge, Duwamish Diagonal and the Norfolk combined sewer overflow. The proposed cleanup would address acres of contaminated sediments through dredging, capping or enhanced natural recovery, including removal of nearly , cubic yards of contaminated.
propose a cleanup plan in “Source control” refers to pollution prevention programs that prevent new and ongoing sources of pollution from getting into the river and harming the environment. For a busy working waterway like the Lower Duwamish, source control is a top priority to prepare for the Superfund cleanup and to help prevent. The new EPA cleanup plan for the Lower Duwamish Waterway seeks to remove 90% of the river’s pollution over a period of 17 years. The EPA issued the following press release today. We are leading efforts to control sources of pollution from the drainage area surrounding the Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW) Superfund site. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversees cleanup of the river sediments.
The LDW Superfund site is a 5-mile portion of the Duwamish River that flows northward into Elliott Bay. Terminal (the subject of this Action Plan), Slip 4, Boeing Plant 2, and Duwamish/Diagonal Way. EPA is the lead for managing cleanup at Terminal and Slip 4. The other two early action cleanup projects were started before the current Lower Duwamish Waterway RI/FS was initiated.
The Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW), located in Seattle, Washington, was added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priorities List (Superfund) on Septem Section 1 of this Action Plan provides background information about the LDW site and EAA-7, including the source control strategy and participating agencies.
Source control is the process of finding sources of contamination, then stopping or reducing them before they reach the Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW). We must ensure that sources of contamination to the LDW are sufficiently controlled before in-waterway cleanup begins.
This means we must investigate. investigated sediments in the Lower Duwamish Waterway as part of the Elliott Bay Action Program and identified a number of stations that exhibited high levels of contamination (stations north and south of Kellogg Island, Slip 3, Slip 2, and north of T).
